When the Earth is between the sun and the moon, the Earth casts a shadow onto the moon.A total lunar eclipse is when Earth’s hard shadow covers the entire surface of the Moon. When this occurs, it is called a blood moon because the moon turns red! The moon turns red because as the Earth passes between the sun and the moon, direct sunlight is blocked and the only light hitting the moon is filtered through our atmosphere.Pictured above is a total lunar eclipse from November 8, 2022.
