By 1959, Young finished second in the NCAA steeplechase. By 1960 he made the USA Olympic team for the Rome Olympics. He also made the American team for the 1964 Tokyo Olympics, the 1968 Mexico City Olympics and the 1972 Munich Olympics. He won a bronze medal in the steeplechase in Mexico City. Arizona’s Hall of Fame track coach Dave Murray, who enrolled at the UA just as Young was becoming a global distance-running figure, also counts Young as one of his foundational mentors.
