“I've gone from complete invisibility to rather intense visibility,” says Netflix’s star comedian—whose Nanette follow-up, Douglas, finds Gadsby learning to love her autism
at a moment when #MeToo was just picking up steam. “Because of when it landed, there were a lot of men who were really angry that they didn’t get a say in removing Louis CK and including me” in the comedy pantheon, she says, letting out a wheezy laugh. “They’re like:!” The show was not written in response to #MeToo, though. Gadsby had been performing it on the Australian and British circuits for a year before the Netflix special, inspired by the gay marriage debate in Australia.
Actually, Gadsby tells me, the whole thing is structured like a musical fugue: It has a prelude, interweaves several themes, and has a stretto calling back and building to a climax at the end.we say it…the musicality and a rhythm,” she says. “The whole idea ofis that I bring people along for the ride and then the jokes fold in on themselves a little bit.” The performance culminates in a series of callbacks to previous bits.
