Hanging Judge | Recruitment of refs is becoming more difficult

For various reasons, it’s long been a problem to get youngsters to join our ranks. Whether it is the match fee, which some find to be too little for the commitment needed, or the distances travelled to games too far away and not worth the effort, fewer and fewer guys are drawn to the black uniform.

I guess the verbal abuse could be overlooked as unruly behaviour from people who know no better, but the assault of referees is something else. In my opinion, there is only one solution and it has to be laid squarely at the door of the home team, which is responsible for the behaviour of its players, officials and supporters.A club cannot use the excuse that “he’s a spectator” or “he’s not one of ours”.

Respect for the authority of the referee has been eroded over the years by the inaction of the powers that be in football, to the extent that assault on officials is becoming a more regular occurrence.
