Get an early look at the upcoming sci-fi action game on the Nintendo Switch 2. This hands-on preview explores the game's performance, combat mechanics, and overall potential to impress on the next-gen handheld console.
Originally conceived back in 2020, the forthcoming action game from Capcom , introducing a brand-new sci-fi intellectual property, has been eagerly anticipated. Initially slated for release in 2022, the game faced a series of delays, building anticipation among fans. Now, the developers are targeting an April 24th release this year, with plans to launch the title across multiple platforms, including PC, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and, notably, the Nintendo Switch 2 .
Accompanying the release date announcement, Capcom unveiled a playable demo, offering players a firsthand experience of the game. However, this demo primarily showcased the game's performance on PC, leaving console players to wonder about their experience. Luckily, I recently had the opportunity to play the game, which was playable at a recent Nintendo Switch 2 showcase. This provided a crucial insight into how the game functions on the handheld console. I was able to assess the game's performance both in docked and handheld modes, and the initial impressions of what the Switch 2 can achieve with action games are highly encouraging, especially when compared to its predecessor, the original Switch. For those whose PCs might not meet the required specifications, the question of gameplay quality is paramount. This hands-on experience aims to delve into the gameplay mechanics and overall experience of playing the game, which has the potential to redefine the action game genre.\After years of inconsistent third-party ports on the Nintendo Switch, the Switch 2 needs to earn the trust of the gaming community. While I've played a few action games on the console, many have been ports of older titles. The game demo immediately immerses the player, introducing the characters Diana and Hugh in close proximity. The graphics on the Switch 2 look impressive, bringing the distinct science fiction world to life. Although Hugh remains fully suited throughout the demo, Diana's facial features and hair are prominently displayed. The level of detail is commendable, despite the Switch 2's ongoing challenge with rendering blonde hair effectively, a challenge also faced by similar games. The demo incorporates both exploration and combat, both of which ran smoothly. No noticeable lag was observed during Hugh's movements or in the midst of combat. Considering the fast-paced nature of the combat sequences, this is particularly noteworthy. The demo, approximately 15 minutes long, offers only a glimpse into what's in store on the Switch 2. However, based on the initial experience, the game has the potential to be a great fit for the Nintendo console, making it a promising addition to the Switch 2's library. This experience could be a game-changer for the Switch 2, a console that may struggle to earn the trust of players if it does not prove itself. The game's demo proved that the Switch 2 is going to be able to host high-quality action games.\One of the most defining aspects of the game, beyond its status as a fresh sci-fi IP from Capcom, is its innovative combat system. The game's Steam description highlights its “unique hacking twist.” This was experienced firsthand while playing on the Switch 2, and the description of the game proved to be quite accurate. This game has a combat system that engages both sides of the brain. Over the years, I've played numerous action RPGs and adventure games, and my reflexes are sharp, but this game takes the action gameplay to the next level. Diana’s hacking abilities are used in and out of combat. While exploring, she can override systems and access new areas. It’s in combat that this system truly distinguishes the game. Diana rides on Hugh’s back, supporting him against hostile robots. This requires the player to simultaneously control both characters during combat. Before Hugh can inflict damage using his arsenal of weapons, Diana must “hack” each enemy. This involves locking onto a target and completing a mini-puzzle to reach a specific point, which then allows Hugh to target and damage an enemy, often by hitting a specific weak point. This means that combat is not just point-and-shoot or hack-and-slash. The hacking grid is unique each time, including potential boosts and pitfalls as you guide your cursor. This keeps you engaged in a unique way. The game is scheduled to be released in April. The demo gave a taste for the combat, and it’s a high-quality gameplay experience. The limited hints at the broader world and story of the game left a lot to be desired. This is a game to watch out for in 2026
