Hamas has announced the assassination of its leader Ismail Haniyeh during a targeted strike on his home in Tehran, Iran.

“The Islamic Resistance Movement Hamas mourns to our great Palestinian people… the martyred leader, the Mujahid Ismail Haniyeh.” The man was appointed to head a Hamas office in 1997 and rose through the ranks of the organisation before becoming Palestinian Prime Minister in 2006. Since then, Haniyeh had been responsible for the leadership and representation of the Islamist group, particularly in the international arena.
