Clare O’Neil offered her condolences to the family of a 66-year-old Australian woman who died in an attack on a kibbutz near Gaza; US Secretary of State Antony Blinken will meet with senior Israeli leaders this week. Follow updates here.
Foreign Minister Penny Wong has acknowledged the death of grandmother Galit Carbone, the first Australian confirmed dead as result of Hamas’ deadly attacks in Israel. The 66-year-old was reportedly executed at the Be’eri kibbutz, about 5 kilometres from the Gaza Strip. Wong said the government was offering consular assistance to Carbone’s family in Israel and Australia.
“On behalf of the government, I wish to convey my deepest condolences to the family and loved ones of Ms Carbone,” she said in a statement. “Australia unequivocally condemns the attacks on Israel by Hamas, there is no excuse for the deliberate killing of innocent civilians. “Our thoughts are with all those killed and injured in these attacks and all others affected. Australia continues to urge the protection of civilian lives at all times.
