On Saturday, however, one of our most sacred seasons became a living nightmare. In a surprise attack, the terrorist group Hamas brutalized residents of Israel, home to half of the world’s Jewish population, killingrained over Israel. It marked the largest number of Jews killed in a single day since the Holocaust, according toInitial reports include videos that seem to portray the most gruesome crimes.
The values of the High Holidays remind us that despite the uncontrollable, unbearable and unimaginable, we all have the power to control our own legacy and make a difference. For me, these lessons, coupled with this fresh wound of heartbreak, propel me to defiantly internalize “Am Yisrael Chai,” or in English, “The People of Israel Live,” while nonetheless continuing to long for my people’s eternal dream: a world of peace.
