Three percent fewer workers, out of the 22,000 surveyed, said they were thriving. The findings represent the first time in Gallup’s evaluation of workers’ lives, which began in the 2000s, that more employees have been struggling than thriving. Tuesday’s results also come at a time of economic uncertainty, when low hiring and firing rates and the introduction of AI into the workplace stresses already dissatisfied workers. Three of four employees told Gallup in the survey that it was a bad time to find a quality job, while 28% said it was a good time. There were nearly seven million open positions at the start of the year, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics . Last month, 7.6 million people were unemployed, or 4.4% of the workforce. The hiring and firing rates have remained steady for much of the past two years. In March 2024, 5.4 million workers gained employment, while 5.3 million lost their jobs, BLS has reported. This past December, businesses brought on 5.3 million people and separated from a similar number. Companies may be keeping their employment steady while AI’s effects on their operations becomes clearer. Some executives have reportedOperator Collective, a tech-focused venture capital firm, found in a recent survey that most executives believe AI is relevant in hiring and firing but not yet decisive. Only five percent of the 123 people polled between October 2025 and this past January said the technology had a “high” impact on their workforce numbers. Half of the executives reported reduced hiring because of AI. Economic worries have maintained a central place in the public’s mind over the past few years. Voters, who cited the economy as their most important issue in the 2024 elections, have elected many candidates with messaging focused on affordability since last fall. Governors Abigail Spanberger of Virginia and Mikie Sherrill of New Jersey, along with New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani, all enjoyed success in November with commitments to address economic concerns among their constituents.
