Since rolling out its measles vaccination drive at the beginning of the year, the City of Ekurhuleni has successfully inoculated 526 000 children.
Due to the recent outbreak of the disease among children aged between six months and 15, the CoE launched the programme with the hope of reaching one million eligible recipients by the end of March.
“Although we have not yet reached our target, the programme will continue,” said CoE spokesperson Zweli Dlamini. “Parents are encouraged to consent to have their children vaccinated during school visits conducted by members of the health department or to visit their local clinics for it to be administered.”
Measles is a highly contagious respiratory infection that causes a skin rash accompanied by flu-like symptoms.
