Haitian President Jovenel Moïse was assassinated in an attack on his home early Wednesday morning, the country’s prime minister announced, in an incident that threatens to stoke further violence in the increasingly unstable Caribbean nation which faces growing economic and social woes....
The identity of the attackers hasn’t been revealed but Joseph said in the statement that some of the attackers spoke in Spanish. Police have been deployed to the country’s National Palace and an upscale community in the capital city of Port-au-Prince.Prior to his assassination, the 53-year-old Moïse facing growing calls to step down after his official term ended in February 2021. Protestors across Haiti had been demanding Moïse’s removal since July 2018 as the country faced spiraling food and fuel prices.
