Armed gangs in Haiti continue their reign of terror, leaving a trail of death and destruction. In a recent attack on Kenscoff, a town near Port-au-Prince, at least 50 people were killed and dozens injured. The attack highlights the dire security situation in Haiti.
At least 50 people were killed and dozens injured in a brutal attack by armed gangs on Kenscoff , a town situated just 10 kilometers (6.2 miles) from Haiti's capital, Port-au-Prince. Local media reports detailed the assault as a large-scale operation aimed at seizing control of the area. The violence left a trail of destruction in its wake, with 100 homes burned to the ground, according to an independent civil society organization.
In response to the escalating violence, Haiti National Police spokesman Michel-Ange Louis Jeune confirmed that security forces managed to kill 20 gang members during the operation. He assured the public that measures are being implemented to restore order and security to the affected region. This latest attack underscores the alarming reality of Haiti's ongoing security crisis. The country, home to over 11 million people, has been battling a multi-faceted crisis encompassing political instability, economic hardship, and relentless gang violence for years.Armed gangs now hold sway over an estimated 80 percent of Port-au-Prince, and the situation has deteriorated to the point where violence has claimed the lives of over 5,000 people in gang-related attacks during 2024 alone. The crisis has also deeply impacted Haiti's political landscape. Prime Minister Ariel Henry resigned in April 2024 amidst the turmoil, and the Transitional Council subsequently appointed Garry Conille as his successor. However, Conille's term was short-lived, and on November 11, businessman Alix Didier Fils-Aime took over the leadership role.
