is a space for Black people across industries to reflect on their journeys to self-love and how accepting their hair, in all its glory, played a pivotal role in this process. Each week they share their favorite hair rituals and products and the biggest lessons they’ve learned when it comes to affirming their beauty and owning their unique hair texture., Jawara is the mastermind behind many of fashion’s favorite hair looks.
Jawara is best known for creating mesmerizing styles on others, but he also serves as his own canvas. “I was raised in a household where my parents taught us to appreciate our natural hair,” he explains. “They were all about loving yourself, your complexion, et cetera, so I’ve always appreciated my own hair too.” When he was younger, Jawara had very long hair. “I used to braid it and dye it all the time,” he says.
“I’ve always been obsessed with the ingredients in different hair products, oils, and treatments. I’m always taking pictures of the bottles, the packaging, and the ingredients.”Photo: Courtesy of Jawara Needless to say, being his own guinea pig, especially at the beginning of his career when he’d test out different styles and color treatments on himself, has paid dividends for Jawara. “We live in a society that’s taught us we need to tame our hair, but I think the journey is all about spending time with your hair and figuring out what styles truly work for you,” he says. In tending to the health of his hair, Jawara has been mixing up DIY elixirs for years.
With 2022 primed to be his biggest year yet, Jawara will unveil a hair product line he’s been working on and put out a coffee-table book in celebration of Black hair and individuality. “I never push anyone in a direction that they’re not comfortable with,” he says. “Hair is one of the most personal things we have. It’s way more personal than the clothes we put on. It’s an extension of what we feel and who we are.
