Hailee's tale began its recent astronomical upswing with no more glamorous opening deck than an ad in a newspaper. She noticed open auditions were taking place with Joel and Ethan Coen for a part that sounded like it could be bespoke for Hailee. ‘So I thought I'd give this nationwide search a go,' she says. She called her agent and asked how she could go about getting an audition. 'I was going to put myself on tape but I was called in to read for the casting agent.
Hailee didn't come fully prepped from a showbiz background. She was as organic a casting as Hollywood will allow for. The Coens had hit gold dust in her. 'I'd only decided I wanted to act a few years earlier. I was nine. I'd tried sports and things and I was no good at them, really. Then I decided to act, and the thing I really wanted to do I was good at.''Right! I mean, this has all been so lucky for me. I did a few grad students' short films.
She chose her Marchesa gown for the night with the help of a stylist. 'I sketched out a dress, really badly on a piece of paper. I'm no artist, it wasn't very good at all. But she knew exactly what I wanted. She'd had a ton of options through but I was quite clear what I wanted and she got it straight away. The dress was a fairytale. The night was a fairytale. You have an image in your mind of how these things will be? Well, that's how it was.
