As humans, we admire the time they have put in on this earth and the paths they have, in one way or another, opened for the generations that followed.

So it should not have been surprising to see the accolades being rained on Mangosuthu Gatsha Buthelezi in the past week as he presided over the coronation of new Zulu King Misuzulu and about his reaching the impressive age of 94.Guiding the enervated Misuzulu to the throne amid formidable opposition from powerful forces within the royal family was a great feat on the old leader’s part.

It boggles the mind how a nation that claims to be appalled at South Africa’s high levels of violent crime can celebrate a mass murderer who contributed so much to the culture of violence that prevails today; how a people that is so fixated on the sins of the past can so casually overlook the sins of a man who was responsible for so much of the killing that happened in the name of apartheid.

This is the narrative that he and his people want to dominate the remaining years of his life and which must linger after he is gone. They want this line to be spewed over and over when tributes pour in and the eulogies are delivered. No doubt it will fall on some fertile ground.
