Gwendoline Christie plays this in The Sandman.
Summary SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY SCROLL TO CONTINUE WITH CONTENT Known for playing the noble Brienne of Tarth in Game of Thrones, Gwendoline Christie got the chance to play a villain in season 1 of Netflix's The Sandman. Released by Netflix in 2022, The Sandman is an adaptation of Neil Gaiman's comic book series of the same name.
The Sandman season 1 was met with strong reviews, and it ranks among the best adaptations of Neil Gaiman's work. In addition to the show's exquisite production design and mind-bending special effects, the Sandman cast performances have often been singled out as a highlight. Though most of that acclaim has gone to Sturridge and David Thewlis, who plays the villainous John Dee, Christie holds her own in her scenes.
When creating the character of Lucifer Morningstar, Christie reportedly took from a wide variety of inspirations, one of the earliest ones being a series of paintings from 19th-century French artist Gustave Doré, but another big source of influence coming from David Bowie Christie said, "...this idea of Lucifer being a junkie angle, that was directly inspired by David Bowie." .
Christie's Lucifer Is Different From Tom Ellis' Christie is not the first actor to play Neil Gaiman's Lucifer Morningstar, as a previous screen incarnation of the character existed in the 2016 TV series, Lucifer, and he was played by Tom Ellis.
While there was some speculation that Ellis could possibly return as Lucifer in Netflix's The Sandman, Gaiman ultimately shut these rumors down. The writer explained, "I love the Lucifer TV series... I think what those guys do is fabulous and delightful and we are not planning to do that... We are planning to do something that is a whole lot more like what we did in the comics, only slightly bigger." .
