Sky News Australia’s Political Editor Andrew Clennell has blasted New South Wales Premier Chris Minns and the opposition for the “gutless” failure to condemn Gladys Berejiklian amid ICAC’s “serious corrupt conduct” findings.
Despite finding the former premier “breached public trust” and was corrupt, the state’s political leaders have danced around criticising her and instead attacked the watchdog for the lengthy time it took to table a report.
“She gets a leave pass because she managed things during the pandemic according to these politicians. “It’s been two years since the public inquiry took place in Sydney in NSW for the findings to be released and if you’re an official or a public servant that is the subject of an inquiry to hold your life effectively up for years and years is just too long,” Mr Minns said in Sydney on Thursday.
“I’ve seen plenty of governments go bad in NSW and bad in a very big way and I’d say after those comments there’s got to be a watch on this government and its integrity and how it deals with matters of integrity,” Clennell said. He did admit that ICAC had made “significant and serious findings” but kept leaving the door open for Ms Berejiklian to challenge them in the Supreme Court.
“To do so to conceal conduct she suspected concerned, or have might concerned, corrupt conduct on the part of Mr Maguire, another member of Parliament, both to protect herself and him from the Commission exercising its investigative powers was grave misconduct,” ICAC said in its report.
