Somber firefighters lined the streets outside the Vander Plaat Colonial Home in Fair Lawn, NJ, to honor tragic Teaneck, NJ, resident and Brooklyn Engine Company 226 member Mark Batista, 39, in the morning,In one particularly gut-wrenching photo, Batista’s widow, Lenin Ventura, is caught collapsing in sobs while clutching her husband’s helmet — with the couple’s 11-year-old daughter by her side.

Batista – a dad of three who served with the FDNY as an EMT and firefighter for 15 years – was killed when he tried to rescue his daughter from a rip current near a jetty off Sylvania Avenue Beach in Avon-by-the-Sea around 8:30 a.m. June 9.Mark Batista was a 15-year FDNY veteran.Batista’s son called 911 from the shore, and first responders were able to save the girl after a frantic 10-minute search. His body was found submerged around 10 a.m.

FDNY rep Amanda Farinacci Gonzalez said of the late Brooklyn native last week, “Firefighter Batista was a dedicated public servant who spent fifteen years serving in the FDNY, as both an EMT and a firefighter. The Engine 226 subsequently rallied around the family by launching a GoFundMe for funeral expenses.Instagram/Mark Batista“In many conversations, he would describe how his loving wife, Lenin, brings him peace. How proud he is of his sons and how his princess Leann was his world.

“In the firehouse, he was always a pleasure to work with. Always keeping a positive outlook on life. He was very loved and respected. You knew you had someone you can count on to get the job done if he was working.”In addition to his wife and daughter, Batista is survived by two sons in their 20s.
