Park officials said a woman called 911 just after midnight on July 4 and reported being held at gunpoint by Fussner in a residence at Canyon Village. The woman told rangers that Fussner threatened to kill her and others, including plans to allegedly carry out a mass shooting at July 4 events outside the park.
Fussner was spotted around 8 a.m. when he began to open fire near Canyon Lodge, which houses employee and public dining rooms. Fussner opened fire with a semi-automatic rifle at the lodge, which was occupied by nearly 200 people.
