Chesterton High School was placed on a brief seven-minute lockdown Wednesday morning while police and school administrators investigated a report of a student in possession of what appeared to be a weapon, but turned out to be an airsoft gun.
At approximately 9:27 a.m. CHS administration received the report. They and Duneland School Corporation School Resource Officers immediately responded by placing the school on lockdown and isolating the student, according to a release from the Chesterton Police Department.An investigation was conducted and the student was found in possession of an airsoft gun. The student was detained immediately by law enforcement and the lockdown was lifted at 9:34 a.m.
The male suspect is a 16-year-old junior. He was transported to the Porter County Juvenile Detention Center and charged with intimidation, a Level 6 felony in juvenile court.“We understand that these situations can be unsettling and we appreciate your patience and cooperation through this process,” CHS Principal Brent Martinson said in a statement shared by the Chesterton Police Department.
Chesterton Police Chief Tim Richardson praised Martinson’s response. “He and the two SROs, they handled it perfectly this morning. They immediately ran into the threat and made sure everyone was safe. I’m very proud of all of them.” The student’s enrollment status following the incident is unknown. “The Duneland School Corporation does not share information regarding students,” Bridget Martinson, director of public relations and marketing for the school corporation, said in an email Wednesday afternoon.
