The owner of Central Texas Gun Works, Michael Cargill, admitted the gun used in the spree of 12 shootings in Austin over the weekend was stolen by a teenager.

He blames the Travis County District Attorney's office for not prosecuting one of the suspects months ago. Confusion over the suspects' ages may have been the first step in the shooting spree, where four people were shot and injured between Saturday and Sunday.

"We didn't know they were teenagers," Cargill said. "Even when the Austin Police Department showed up. We showed the video to them. They thought they were 20 years of age.

While the exact way the gun was stolen remains unclear, Cargill said people buying guns at his store are not initially ID'd.

"Once they're purchasing a firearm, then we grab their ID. We do a complete FBI background check. Get all the information," he said.

"They've come into the gun store apparently four other times to try to steal guns from us," Cargill said. He said back in January, the 17-year-old suspect stole a gun from his store and ran onto a Capmetro bus at a nearby stop. APD confirmed they arrested the teenager and retrieved the gun on the bus. President of the Austin Police Retired Officers' Association, Dennis Farris, said the store needs to be more responsible.

"It looks like this is happening when his shop is open. You have to think about what we are doing, or what we should be doing to make things safer," he said.

"Thank God nobody died from this. ""This could have been prevented if this individual had been prosecuted," Cargill said. "He should not have been on the streets. ""We remain committed to working with our law enforcement partners to ensure that the defendants are held accountable and to maintain the safety of our community.

"Cargill said they're installing more security measures inside the shop tomorrow to make sure this doesn't happen again, but would not share specific details. Two suspects are in custody and a third remains at large Sunday afternoon following at least 10 shootings across South Austin that left four people injured.
