Turmoil at the NRA and spending by gun-control groups have changed the political equation on gun rights, but not enough to produce big legislative changes
In 2018, GOP Rep. Barbara Comstock campaigned on her top rating from the National Rifle Association and attacked her opponent for supporting expanded background checks.
She lost the race, and on Monday, the woman who beat her, Democratic Rep. Jennifer Wexton, spoke at a candlelight vigil for victims of the weekend shootings in El Paso, Texas, and Dayton, Ohio, which left at least 31 people dead. The vigil was held outside of the NRA’s headquarters in Fairfax, Va., near the district Ms. Wexton now represents.
