A new Houston Chronicle database tracks firearm deaths among children in Harris County and around Houston, Texas.
This database tracks firearm deaths among children and adolescents under 18 in Harris County, a growing problem that has steadily increased over the past five years, according to data from the Institute of Forensic Sciences. In that time, most of the victims died in gun homicides, according to the data, including shootings that authorities say were unintentional. Meanwhile, 58 children have died by suicide since 2018.
The database below includes deaths from January 2022 to present. Suicides are included in the tally above but excluded from the map and list below to protect privacy. Each death leaves behind a gaping hole for the parents, siblings, friends, classmates and teachers who knew and loved the victims. Among the victims were young children who loved unicorns and playing outside and middle schoolers who brightened their homes with laughter and silliness. Most were teenagers — rebellious and reliable, sweet and smart — on the cusp of adulthood.Shane was a student at Robert E. Lee High School who loved playing sports.
