The region saw 626 gun offences in the year leading up to March
West Yorkshire has seen the highest level of gun crime since records began over the past year, show new figures.
Most people affected by gun crime were young, with 49% aged between ten and 29-years-old, despite this group making up less than a quarter of the population. The year also saw a surge in the use of imitation guns, with 2,719 incidents across England and Wales – a 23% rise on the year before and the highest figure since 2005-06. West Yorkshire Police have said much of the increase has been driven by offences involving BB guns and gel guns.
“That's why we are committed to focusing every effort to ensure that the people who illegally carry firearms are brought to justice where they are highly likely to serve a prison sentence.
