Teams meet again Friday with San Diego needing one more victory
The Gulls faced a simple scenario Wednesday night against the Ontario Reign at Pechanga Arena: earn a regulation win and they would lock up a spot in the expanded AHL Calder Cup playoffs.
However, clinching and details for a postseason matchup will have to wait as Ontario rode a hat trick from Martin Frk, stingy defense and 22 saves from Matthew Villalata to a 5-1 victory.The teams return to Pechanga to conclude the regular-season series Saturday night. The Gulls are 3-7 against Ontario on the season.Benoit-Olivier Groulx scored his 11th goal of the season on a second-period deflection to tie the game at 1-1, but San Diego was outshot 28-23 and finished 0 for 6 on the power play.
Forward Blake McLaughlin, who was assigned jersey number 22, became the third recent college star to make his professional debut as a Gull. The 6-foot, 170-pounder, who scored 39 goals with 67 assists in 142 games at Minnesota, joins defenseman Drew Helleson and center Josh Lopina as players who finished college careers this spring and immediately jumped to the pros.
