The Gulf Coast is on alert for a sharp shift in temperatures as the FOX10 StormTracker team tracks some of the coldest air of the season headed to the area next week

) - The Gulf Coast is on alert for a sharp shift in temperatures as the FOX10 StormTracker team tracks some of the coldest air of the season headed to the area next week.“We’re selling ice this weekend and wearing shorts and next week that will not be the case,” Sanford said.

Sanford said residents can start with one of the biggest problems seen with a hard freeze, that’s busted pipes. “What you’ll do is wrap it around there and a lot of times people will take duct tape and wrap it around here and hold it on, but that’ll help insulate that pipe,” Sanford said. Sanford said protection shouldn’t stop outside, as safeguarding indoor plumbing can help prevent costly damage too. “It’s also good to keep your water dripping so you can just have a little bit of water running in the house, say in the bathroom faucet, and that little bit of flow through there will help prevent freezing as well,” Sanford said.A few people trickled into Dawes Hardware Thursday, picking up supplies to keep their homes safe as they prepare for the bitter cold to move in. Sanford said residents shouldn’t forget about their animals and livestock as the cold sets in. “You have a lot of people that have livestock or dogs, just pets, animals outside, we will sell a lot of hay they’ll put out as a bedding material, you know, to give the animals somewhere warm to lay,” Sanford said. Sanford said one of the biggest mistakes is waiting until it’s already freezing. He advises residents to protect their pipes, pets and plants before temperatures start dropping.NEW INFORMATION: Former Mayor Sandy Stimpson nominated by Mayor Cheriogotis for new appointmentGreat white shark caught off Pensacola BeachSheriff Burch says he misspoke about unauthorized ICAC lettersNew playground opens at Penelope House domestic violence shelter
