GULF BREEZE, Fla. -- The City of Gulf Breeze has updated every crosswalk in the city to comply with a new state law on public safety.FDOT sent a letter to the city of Gulf Breeze, saying they would do the work if they didn't comply by this Thursday.

Gulf Breeze is at least the third city in our viewing area to receive the letter from FDOT. In a letter to FDOT, Gulf Breeze City Manager Samantha Abel said the use of a specific green paint on the seven crosswalks was in compliance with the law. "Traffic green and terracotta color have long been approved for supplementing the white raised crosswalks," Abel told WEAR News on Tuesday. "To our reading, that hasn't changed." Abell told FDOT in her letter that "traffic green" is permitted under the "manual on uniform traffic control devices.""What has changed is that the state has said the traffic green is no longer determined to be safe," Abell said. "Yet at the same time, we're talking to our sister cities and counties and the department of transportation is continuing to use that green paint on state networks." "So that's where you see that green in Pensacola as you head to I-110," she added. "It's to let motorists know you're sharing this roadway with bicycles."Gulf Breeze has more than $2 million in appropriations hanging in the balance in this year's budget and didn't want to jeopardize that. "What we're seeing is the work is being done at night," she said. "So for our small community, if we were to pay for night time or holiday hours over Labor Day weekend, that causes a lot of concern."The new law has brought changes across the state. And by Thursday, the City of Pensacola will hand the responsibility over to FDOT toAbell questions why crosswalks are caught in the crosshairs of this controversy. "We definitely think that we had raised crosswalks -- that just last year received a national award for engineering design -- that now have been deemed unsafe," she said. "It's a uniform color, it's used nationwide. There is no political symbolism on traffic green anymore than using hazard yellow," she added. The city of Gulf Breeze says this project cost roughly $1,000 to repaint each of the seven crosswalks.WEAR News asked FDOT about the cost and also how they plan to remove this mural. We're waiting to hear back.
