A Bexar County jury heard Douglas Skaggs testify all morning, then took 30 minutes to reach a murder verdict.

Douglas Skaggs was found guilty of murder after jurors heard him testify all morning Friday. It took the panel 30 minutes to render a verdict, and they will decide punishment Monday.Bexar County jurors took half an hour Friday to find Douglas Skaggs guilty of murder for fatally shooting Tito Roman on St. Patrick’s Day in 2021 at an extended stay hotel.

Skaggs described his life story in a loud, rambling speech that lasted most of the morning and into the lunch hour, talking for more than a minute without taking a breath and at times speaking over his attorney and prosecutors as they argued over objections. Skaggs described frequent trips to Mexico to buy guns and drugs to bring to the United States to sell, and he testified that he killed someone else in another state.

Skaggs said he and Roman had been in a dispute over a Ford Bronco — Roman had promised Skaggs he could have it if he did some work on some vehicles that Roman had in storage. Skaggs said took possession of the vehicle and drove his co-defendant, Hayley Gibbens in it the day before the killing.
