Eleven local women from Guernsey completed a half-marathon in Copenhagen to raise funds for a mental health first aid course designed to support parents and carers of young people struggling with eating disorders.
Eleven local women traveled to Copenhagen, Denmark, in September to run and support each other in a half-marathon. The run was a fundraiser for a mental health first aid (MFHA) course aimed at helping parents and carers of young people struggling with eating disorders . With over £4,500 raised, the group held their first course in October and plan to run another in February 2025.
Organizers Jenny Thomas and Lois Vidamour were motivated to help after supporting friends through 'devastating' eating disorder journeys. The group hopes the course will empower people to better understand eating disorders and feel more confident supporting those who are struggling. Miss Thomas said: 'Our friend was saying one of the best things for her recovery was just knowing other people are going through that as well and you are not alone.' Miss Vidamour, who also participated in the race, said the course would hopefully make it 'easier for people to open up'. Miss Thomas and Miss Vidamour stated that the group has initiated a broader conversation about eating disorder awareness, engaging with people across the island to explore ways to enhance support systems for individuals with eating disorders in Guernsey
