In recent years, the airport has experienced numerous perimeter breaches. The most serious came in late 2022, when a man skirted airport security twice within an hour and disabled the airport’s main radar tower, shutting down air travel on the day before Thanksgiving.

CLEVELAND, Ohio – Cleveland Hopkins is installing guardrails around a portion of the airport perimeter in an effort to prevent vehicles from crashing through fencing.

Dennis Kramer, chief of planning and engineering for the airport, told members of Cleveland City Council’s Transportation Committee this week that it’s impossible to prevent all perimeter breaches. But airports can make it more difficult. In recent years, the airport has added cameras and other equipment to better and more quickly detect breaches when they occur.

An airport spokeswoman said the new guardrails would cost approximately $531,000. The city should hear sometime in late summer whether it will receive FAA funding to replace its fencing.
