The Guardians have confirmed a trade with Washington to acquire outfielder Lane Thomas.
DETROIT — The Guardians have made a trade with the Washington Nationals to acquire right-handed hitting outfielder Lane Thomas, both clubs confirmed to cleveland.com on Monday.
Thomas brings additional speed to Cleveland’s lineup as his 28 stolen bases are the third most in the majors. Thomas has reached base safely in 25 consecutive games, the longest active streak in baseball. A fifth-round pick of the Blue Jays in 2014, Toronto traded Thomas to St. Louis in 2017 in exchange for international signing pool money. He debuted for the Cardinals in 2019 and hit four home runs in his first 44 plate appearances.Last year, Thomas was Washington’s everyday right fielder and hit .268 with career highs in home runs and steals . In 77 games this season, Thomas has eight home runs and 40 RBI to go along with a .253 batting average and a .738 OPS.
Clemmey, 19, was the No. 58 overall pick by Cleveland last year out of Bishop Hendricken High in Rhode Island. The 6-foot-6 lefty is 1-4 with a 4.67 ERA in his first season with the Low-A Lynchburg Hillcats. But Clemmey has posted outstanding strikeout numbers with 97 punchouts in 69 1/3 innings while walking 47. He was rated the organization’s No. 8 prospect by MLB Pipeline.
