Syndergaard, who earned the nickname “Thor” and once was one of the game’s rising pitching stars with the New York Mets before injuries, signed a one-year dealand Jadiel Sanchez at the trade deadline last season and went 5-2 with a 4.12 ERA down the stretch for the NL champion Phillies. The Guardians’ surplus of young middle infielders made Rosario expendable. He’s batting .265 with six triples, three homers, and 40 RBIs this season. But he was in his final contract year and eligible for free agency this winter.
