Following an 8-1 loss to Atlanta, the Guardians placed right-hander Cal Quantrill back on the 15-day injured list Thursday after his sore right shoulder flared up again.

Quantrill, who missed 26 games with inflammation in the shoulder in June, returned June 30 and allowed six earned runs in 3 1/3 innings against the Cubs last week and was tagged for five earned runs on a career-high 11 hits against the Braves.

Francona said Guardians trainers indicated after Wednesday’s game that they might need to take a closer look at Quantrill when he arrived at the park ahead of the Kansas City series. Quantrill’s issue, Francona said, is that he’s getting to his velocity, but is not commanding his pitches, and his work in between starts is lacking because of the way the inflammation is limiting him.
