CLEVELAND, Ohio — Cade Smith emerged seemingly from nowhere in 2024 to become one of the Guardians’ biggest weapons at the back end of the bullpen. Smith’s record-setting rookie campaign was recognized during Baseball Canada’s annual national team awards banquet and fundraiser held in Toronto. Several big league veterans were on hand for the ceremony, including Smith’s battery mate, Bo Naylor. Smith finished fifth in voting by the Baseball Writers’ Association of America for the American League Rookie of the Year award and received one vote for fifth place in the AL Cy Young Award race. He ranked first in innings pitched, tied for first in wins and was second in appearances, strikeouts and holds. In the postseason, Smith appeared in nine games for Cleveland, setting a record for a Canadian pitcher in a single postseason.“It was very easy,” Naylor said.
