Carlos Santana's 11-year run in Cleveland, over three tours, has come to an end.
The Guardians, as expected, released the 39-year-old Santana on Thursday after he cleared outright waivers. They will assume the less that $2 million that remains on his one-year deal worth $12 million.
Utility man Daniel Schneemann, activated from the paternity list, will take Santana’s spot on the 26-man roster.Guardians clinging to playoff hopes ahead of Seattle series as offense searches for sparkThe Guardians open a three-game series against the Mariners on Friday night. It will mark first baseman Josh Naylor’s first engagement against Cleveland since he was traded to Arizona in December. Right after trading Naylor, they signed Santana, a free agent, to replace him. The Guardians played Arizona earlier this month, but the Diamondbacks traded Naylor to the Mariners before the July 31st deadline. Santana, one of the best switch-hitters in Cleveland history, appeared in 116 games this season. He hit .225 with 11 homers and 52 RBI. He made his big league debut as a catcher with Cleveland in 2010 after being acquired from the Dodgers for utility man Casey Blake. Last weekend manager Stephen Vogt said Santana was going to lose playing time for the remainder of the year because they wanted to give more playing time to youngsters Kyle Manzardo and C.J. Kayfus. Santana played with the Guardians from 2010 through 2017. He filed for free agency after the 2017 season and signed with Philadelphia. The Guardians traded for him again at the winter meetings before the 2019 season. He played for them in 2019 and 2020 before becoming a free agent and signing with Kansas City for the 2021 season. Santana has hit 336 homers in his career, 227 of them with Cleveland. He ranks sixth on the franchise list in long balls.
