Review: Director James Gunn’s stale “Guardians of the Galaxy” sequel focuses on the origins of Rocket, the hyper-intelligent animal voiced by Bradley Cooper
It’s been a superhero’s journey for writer-director James Gunn: He rose to great heights, was ruined, then re-emerged more powerful than ever. Five years ago Marvel Studios’ corporate parent, Disney, publicly fired Mr. Gunn as he started work on his third “Guardians of the Galaxy” movie over some inappropriate jokes he’d made years earlier on Twitter. A year later Mr. Gunn got himself uncanceled. He is now not only the sole writer and director of “Guardians of the Galaxy Vol.
For better or, I’m afraid, worse. Mass production of comic-book movies has stretched thin the talents of Mr. Gunn and most of his fellow toilers on the superhero assembly line. “GOTG 3” is a blahbuster that, like other recent Marvel disappointments , jogs along from one visually extravagant, strenuously jokey set piece to another without offering much in the way of either dramatic engagement or actually funny ideas.
