Tampa Bay jumped ahead early against Tanner Bibee and the Guardians.
CLEVELAND, Ohio — The Guardians didn’t start the fire against Tampa Bay. It was, in fact, not burning while the world was turning Friday at Progressive Field, while rockers Billy Joel and Rod Stewart played to a crowd down the road at Huntington Bank Stadium.
Cleveland’s lead in the American League Central Division slipped to three games over the Royals, who beat Pittsburgh, 8-3, and their magic number to clinch the division remained at 12 with 14 regular season games to play. Driscoll, a second-round pick of the Padres in 2019, made his big league debut 10 days earlier against Minnesota and gave Tampa a 2-0 lead when Bibee’s 1-0 slider hung over the middle of the plate.
Littell allowed a two-out double to José Ramírez in the first and a two-out triple to Jhonkensy Noel in the second. In both cases he retired the next hitter on fly outs to center. The only other base runner Cleveland managed against Littell was when Ramírez reached on an error by José Caballero at second base in the fourth. Littell got Josh Naylor to ground into a double play and struck out Lane Thomas to end the inning.
