Another rural hospital in our area says it has been forced to shut its labor and delivery unit because of a lack of funding, adding to a maternity desert in rural Alabama.

Grove Hill Memorial Hospital in Clarke County made the announcement today. On social media, the hospital posted that it will now convert its status to a rural emergency hospital and will discontinue labor and delivery services on August 16. In December, Grove Hill Memorial Hospital OB/GYN Dr. Max Rogers told FOX10 the writing was on the wall and unit would be forced to close if it couldn’t find an extra $750,000 a year in funding to stay open.
In a telephone interview today, Rogers said it’s very disappointing and scary for women in rural Alabama as they will likely have to travel an hour and a half in any direction to get maternity services when the unit closes. Last November,In response to FOX10′s request for comment, Gov. Kay Ivey office sent the following statement:
“The governor is aware the Grove Hill Memorial leadership and board have made the decision for the hospital to be a Rural Emergency Hospital. Governor Ivey certainly cares about our mothers’ and newborn babies’ healthcare services, which is why she will continue exploring best possible solutions for the state.
