League of Women Voters of Dallas volunteer Norma Arratia, left, reviews voter registration information with first time voter, Alexa Saucedo, 19, at Super Mercado Mexico in Dallas, Texas, Saturday, October 8, 2022.Some North Texas nonprofits say they have been struggling to register voters before the Nov. 8 election, citing lack of information about the process, disinformation, disinterest and unavailability of materials in languages besides English.

Most of the registrants were new company employees who recently moved to Texas and didn’t know they could not register online. Ericka Miller, the DPS spokeswoman, told KERA News that some state offices have available appointment slots for a few weeks, but others have a wait of several months. “Once I’m registered, I’ll bring my passport and a bank statement with my address to be able to vote during the early voting period,” said Day, who said his driver’s license appointment isn’t scheduled until late November.

Alexa Saucedo, 19, who lives two blocks away from the grocery store, registered that day to vote for the first time. That visit to the store with her parents ended the uncertainty and she said she planned to vote during the early voting period. Sophia Dembling, another League volunteer who registered Arteaga, said it’s common to hear that kind of answer from new citizens from countries where people aren’t required to register to vote.According to the Dallas County numbers, the 2020 election saw the highest amount of citizen participation in recent years.

For Luna and the Somos Tejas team, getting closer to the community and informing them is everyone’s job, both the candidates and the county, and it should happen throughout the entire year, not just when there are elections. In Dallas County, 85% of those eligible to vote did not participate in the primary election on March 1.
