I grew up in Southern California after coming to the United States as a young child and Cuban immigrant.
My dad was an admirer of the nation’s free press. He called this powerful force for good the “fourth estate.” As a result, I was greatly influenced by my father in my career choice. Since I was in elementary school, I wanted to be a part of this great fourth estate as an investigative journalist highlighting government corruption and social inequities.
I’m a data reporter, which means I use math and computer science in a way that most journalists despise. Using tools like SQL or R, I can make sense of mountains of data. So many stories are hiding in datasets that we can access through public records requests. I love teaming up with knowledgeable beat reporters and lending my data skills to their reporting.
From the time I first entered a newsroom, though, I’ve been most drawn to complex issues. In my first internship for my hometown weekly in Ohio, I dug through property records to explain how the trend of family farms turning into subdivisions put pressure on local schools. Growing up, I loved to read and write, so journalism seemed like a natural fit when I enrolled at Ohio University. But I soon came to love journalism for more than just the writing - I loved that it could evoke change and right wrongs. It was this realization that drew me to investigative reporting.
