One of the biggest economic development projects in Lakewood’s history is about to begin groundbreaking.

A groundbreaking ceremony -- giving way to construction of CASTO Communities and North Pointe Realty’s proposed $115 million mixed-use project planned on the 5.7-acre site of the former Lakewood Hospital -- is expected to happen soon. “We’re very excited to see the project finally come to fruition,” Lakewood Mayor Meghan George said. “It’s been a long time coming. We’ve been working hard for many years. We had a couple of false starts but are very excited for the city to get this once-in-a-generation development. “It’s the biggest development, I believe, since The Gold Coast with nearly 300 apartments, thousands of square feet of retail and commercial space, as well as the parking garage that will help support public parking in the downtown.” CASTO and North Pointe Realty’s proposed $115 million mixed-use project planned on the site of the former Lakewood Hospital. Originally estimated at $90 million, the proposed development now includes 24,750 square feet of retail space in Building 1 with an additional 6,600 square feet in the existing Curtis Block building. There’s also a 17,000-square-foot public plaza and community space with 298 units of mixed-income rental and seven for-sale townhomes. The plans also include streetscape and pathway elements, renovation of the Curtis Block building for first-floor retail spaces and second-floor apartments and the northern vehicular entry/exit point from the parking garage with 567 garage spaces .
