Victor Castillo, a groundbreaking passer at Brackenridge and member of the SAISD Athletic Hall of Fame, died on Sept. 5 after a long illness.
Vic tor Castillo never fit the description of a prototypical quarterback. He had a skinny 5-foot-8, 150-pound frame and an unorthodox sidearm delivery. In a race against his offensive linemen, he would probably have finished near the back of the pack – even with a 5-yard head start. But even with his shortcomings, the native of San Antonio 's West Side barrio enjoyed one of the most memorable seasons in city schoolboy history.
The Bulldogs entered the game undefeated and ranked No. 1 in the state. “Spring Branch was the same size or even a little bit larger than the University of Texas,' Minor said. 'But never once did we doubt we could handle that. Nobody could scare us. Nobody could intimidate us. We were accused of being arrogant. But that wasn’t arrogance. We just had supreme confidence.
