Zachary Prouty, 38, faces felony counts of rape by forcible compulsion, rape of an unconscious victim and related charges after investigators said a DNA test linked the groom to the alleged rape of a wedding guest ahead of his October 2025 nuptials in Gettysburg, Pennsylvania, according to Bonneauville Borough court records cited by the Hanover Evening Sun.
Officers responded to WellSpan Gettysburg Hospital on October 17 to investigate an alleged sexual assault that had been reported to staff, according to an affidavit of probable cause. The woman told officers that she had traveled to historic Gettysburg a day earlier to attend the wedding of the woman slated to marry Prouty.
She said she had been left alone with Prouty at a home in Bonneauville Borough on October 16 after other people there had gone to bed, court records indicate. After rebuffing Prouty's advances several times that evening, including kisses without her consent, the woman said she lost consciousness in the kitchen. When she awoke, she said she found herself naked in a bedroom with her clothing nearby and no recollection of what occurred, police said.
Investigators also collected evidence from the Bonneauville Borough home, according to the affidavit. Prouty declined to provide a statement when contacted by police about the incident. A search warrant was executed in October, with the sample being submitted to the Pennsylvania State Police Forensic DNA Laboratory, the Hanover Evening Sun reported.
Investigators received the DNA analysis from the state police lab in March and the findings concluded that the male DNA profile culled from the sexual assault exam had been "approximately 95 billion times more likely" to have originated from Prouty than another individual, police said in court filings. Prouty, who was released on bail following his arraignment early Thursday, is due back in court for a preliminary hearing scheduled for August 12.
Attempts to reach him or an attorney who can speak on his behalf were unsuccessful on Friday. A sparse website for Prouty's wedding indicates that the affair had been scheduled for October 18. A photograph on Facebook indicates the nuptials occurred as planned at The Barn Resort in Gettysburg.
