The Griffin Museum of Science and Industry in Chicago is set to revitalize its historic south portico with a $10 million grant. The project aims to enhance accessibility, introduce modern amenities, and create vibrant public spaces. Visitors will enjoy a café and terrace overlooking the park lagoon and the Obama Presidential Center upon completion in 2027.

The Griffin Museum of Science and Industry in Chicago is embarking on a significant transformation of its historic south portico . A $10 million grant from the Richard H. Driehaus Foundation , as announced in a press release, is fueling this ambitious project. Renovation s are slated to commence this spring, with completion anticipated in 2027. The project's primary objectives are to enhance accessibility, integrate modern amenities, and create vibrant public spaces.

Upon completion, visitors will gain access to the museum's original south entry from Jackson Park. The redesigned portico will feature a café and a terrace offering panoramic views of the park's lagoon and the nearby Obama Presidential Center, scheduled to open in 2026. The renovations will prioritize accessibility by incorporating an elevator, ensuring ease of access for all visitors.Throughout the construction process, the museum will remain operational, and there are no plans to restrict public access to the road or park. The Museum of Science and Industry building, originally designed by Charles Atwood for D.H. Burnham & Co. as 'The Place of Fine Arts' for the 1893 World's Columbian Exposition, is the sole surviving structure from the famed exposition's 'White City.' These upcoming renovations will effectively reopen the museum's original main entry, re-establishing a functional connection between the building and the Columbian Basin, as well as the broader landscape of Jackson Park. Museum President and CEO Chevy Humphrey emphasized the historical significance of the project. 'This project represents a pivotal moment for the Griffin Museum of Science and Industry as we honor its historic past while leading the museum forward,' stated Humphrey. 'The Driehaus Foundation’s generosity allows us to enhance this iconic space while ensuring it is welcoming and accessible for all and continues a legacy of inspiration and engagement for decades of future visitors.' David Vitale, chairman of the museum board, added, 'Restoring the South Portico is not only about preserving a historic architectural treasure but also supporting the museum’s efforts to connect more deeply with the community. This project reflects the Board’s commitment to advancing the museum’s mission, and we are profoundly grateful to the Driehaus Foundation for making this vital project possible.
