Blood donations, conchas, hugs: a grieving Uvalde responds to unspeakable violence with acts of kindness

“It’s just like wow — we are literally a statistic now,” she said. “Nobody knew of Uvalde, and sadly now everyone knows of Uvalde.”Morgan Hynds, 35, also of Uvalde, felt fortunate that her children were with her and not in their school in a neighboring county when the shooting occurred. As she began absorbing the details of Tuesday’s massacre, he couldn’t comprehend how anyone could shoot children.
One of the victims, a 4th grade-teacher named Eva Mireles, had gone to a gym where Hynds worked out. A girl who was killed had often sat in front of Hynds at their church. People who were common faces to Hynds in the community were now gone, erased by an eruption of violence. On Tuesday, the center was able to quickly send 25 units of blood from its shelves to help hospitals that needed it in response to the shooting.Pina asked people to visit southtexasblood.org to schedule an appointment past the Memorial Day holiday, when donations tend to slow down.
