The Caliente greyhound racetrack, whose history dates back to 1927, recently and unexpectedly announced that races would be suspended indefinitely
A greyhound is assessed at a Tijuana vet’s office after being brought from Canódromo Caliente, a greyhound racetrack, on July 24. MEDIVET, the clinic of Dr. Fernando Sánchez Fernández, has helped more than 200 greyhounds.
News of the closure came as a surprise to fans who regularly visited the racetrack between the Xoloitzcuintles de Tijuana soccer stadium and the Caliente Casino in central Tijuana. Operation Greyhound founders Bob Palmatier, left, Bruna Palmatier. transporter Fabriana Cafalli, and volunteer Pam Rand bring three greyhounds to the shelter in El Cajon on July 23.
The Palmatiers, who have five greyhounds of their own, describe these dogs as a “different breed” — wonderful, quiet, working dogs bred for performance.
