Warning! This article contains mentions of miscarriage and SPOILERS about Grey’s Anatomy season 21, episode 8.
Posts 19 Jo’s unexpected pregnancy has been a key storyline since Grey’s Anatomy season 20’s finale. Jo's fainting prompted Levi to test her and tell her she was expecting a baby, leading her to spend the first half of Grey’s Anatomy season 21 wrapping her head around the news, only to learn she and Link were actually expecting twins, making it even more difficult.
Arizona returning would give Jo and her pregnancy the best chance of not turning into yet another miscarriage story, of which Grey’s Anatomy tackled many through the years. Jo’s path had been littered with burdensome challenges, and coming to terms with her pregnancy was already difficult, making a potential miscarriage the final straw after Jo’s long list of tragedies throughout the medical drama.
Even when they happened in less extreme situations, like Arizona’s and Bailey’s miscarriages, they still put them through unimaginable pain, making the occurrence sometimes feel like a plot device to make their circumstances more dramatic. Grey’s Anatomy put Jo through extremely painful situations and season 21 already showed her go through a dark time, making her potential miscarriage entirely avoidable given the many times Grey’s Anatomy already tackled the topic.
