“There’s a lot of evil wandering around nowadays,” said Lauriano, a retired teacher. “There needs to be laws to stop these people from getting control of guns.” The lineup included former U.S. Rep. Beto O’Rourke, the Democratic candidate for governor, as well as U.S. Rep. Joaquin Castro and state Sen. Roland Gutierrez, both San Antonio Democrats. San Antonio Spurs Coach Gregg Popovich also took the stage, alongside gun violence prevention advocates and mass shooting survivors.
In the nearly two weeks since the shooting at Robb Elementary School, Texas’s Republican leaders have shut down calls for gun control, instead focusing on bolstering mental health resources and fortifying school buildings. But Democrats and gun control activists plan to continue advocating for firearm reform, especially concerning assault weapons.
