Spurs’ Gregg Popovich all alone atop NBA regular-season wins list

Popovich passed Doug Moe to become the franchise’s winningest coach when he collected No. 178 on Dec. 19, 2001. By that time, he already had led the Spurs to their first NBA championship in 1999. He would collect four more crowns and would become the NBA’s all-time winningest coach in terms of combined regular season and postseason victories when the Spurs defeated Denver on April 13, 2019, in the opening game of a first-round playoff series.

“I just went to work,” he said. “You go to work that day and try to do the best you can, whether it’s trying to develop a player, or talking Os and Xs, or concentrating on the mental part of the game, whatever it may be. You don’t think about developing your image or something like that. You just do your job, and over time, if you have opportunities and it works out for you, you advance.”
