Gov. Greg Abbott this week endorsed Shelley Luther , a Dallas -area salon owner who was jailed after defying his COVID -19 stay-at-home orders and became a face of GOP resistance to pandemic policies. Luther is the GOP nominee for a deep-red state House district in North Texas . It comes as Abbott is working to lock up support to pass his school voucher plan, which would give families taxpayer dollars to spend on private school tuition. The next legislative session begins in January.

Luther also has an endorsement from Attorney General Ken Paxton, who opposed Smith for supporting his impeachment. Luther ran against Smith in 2022 and lost by 17 points.
